The field of Philosophy of Religion at the DSR is configured in broad terms to encompass the history of Western philosophy from antiquity to the present, extending into critical theory, psychoanalysis, and literary, social, and political theory. It also includes other traditions of thought, such as Indigenous epistemologies, classical Indian philosophy, Buddhist thought, and philosophic traditions of the Islamicate world. Current core faculty strengths include Enlightenment and post-Enlightenment interpretations of religion, modern Jewish philosophy, psychoanalysis and the psychology of religion, Continental political philosophy, and Romanticism and environment. Students in Philosophy of Religion are strongly encouraged to take courses in cognate departments including Philosophy, Comparative Literature, and Political Science.
