Departmental Awards
The McNab Scholarships in Religion
McNab Scholarships are designated exclusively for students in Religion. Students do not apply for these awards; they are considered automatically if their marks so warrant. An A- average is required for these awards.
$400 McNab
A $400 scholarship will be awarded at the end of the fourth year to the student, either full-time or part-time, who has completed a Major or Specialist program in religious studies and who has the highest average in at least three religion courses (full course or their equivalents) taken in the fourth year.
$200 McNab
A $200 scholarship will be awarded at the end of the third year to the student, either full-time or part-time, who is enrolled in a Major or Specialist program in religious studies, and whose program in third year includes at least three courses in religion.
DSR Equity and Justice Awards
Up to two prizes to be awarded annually to undergraduate students who have contributed to promotion of diversity-, equity-oriented awareness, and social justice in relation to activities in the Department for the Study of Religion (DSR) or the University more generally.
One award will relate to activities and the other to production of work relating to themes of equity and diversity. The prize for each award is a certificate and $200.
To be nominated a student should have taken a minimum of 1.0 FCE taught by the DSR. A student can be nominated for more than one year and for more than one prize, if appropriate.
Nomination
For the activities award, nominations are required of up to 400 words. Students can self-nominate, and we also accept nominations from an instructor or from a fellow student, detailing the achievements to be taken into account.
The production of work award will examine work (e.g., an essay, a project, a film) carried out for a DSR course, as nominated by course instructors. Under ‘instructor’ the following categories of teacher are included: Faculty, CI, TF, CLTA, or TA.
Process
The nominations should be sent to the Undergraduate Administrator by one week after the final assessment period of the Spring term at the latest. The recipient of the award will be finalized by late May to early June, after the review of nominations by the Committee.
For the production of work award, instructors should submit student work directly to religion.undergrad@utoronto.ca, with the subject ‘Equity & Justice Award: [student name].
For the activities award, please fill out this nomination form, irrespective of whether you are nominating yourself or another student.
The Undergraduate Administrator will pass on nominations to the Equity and Justice Prize Committee, which will consist of the Associate Chair and two other Faculty, at least one of whom will be a member of the Anti-Racism, Decolonization and Equity (ADE) Committee.
Public recognition
