Nepal Studies Reading Group
When and Where
Description
TODAY: Mary S. Slusser’s Nepal Mandala: intro – ch. 6
This online reading group invites students and faculty working on South Asia, the Himalayas, or Nepal to read and discuss influential and/or recent academic literature in the field of Nepal Studies.
The readings, mostly monographs, may range from textual to ethnographic and visual studies, covering literature, historical, anthropological, sociological, political, as well as art historical material, including visual works such as documentaries or picture books. Occasionally, the group is joined by the respective author for a first-hand account of the writing or editing process.
This academic year the group’s special focus will be on two classic introductory monographs: Mary Slusser’s Nepal Mandala: A Cultural Study of the Kathmandu Valley (1982), with an additional session dedicated to the recent critical reevaluation of the author’s work and legacy, and the English translation of Sylvain Lévi’s Le Népal: étude historique d'un royaume indou (1905-08), featuring the controversial statement that Nepal is “India in the making.”
Hosted by the Centre for South Asian Studies, Asian Institute, Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy
Meetings take place online, Fridays, 10:00-11:30 EST [Full schedule coming soon.]
